As women of the Lord it is very important that we represent the Most High in a righteous manner contrary to the worlds popular fashions and trends. Women are commanded to dress modestly.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”
MODEST – 1 unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one’s abilities or achievements. 2 (of an amount, rate, or level of something) relatively moderate, limited, or small: not excessively large, elaborate, or expensive: 3 (of a woman) dressing or behaving so as to avoid impropriety or indecency, esp. to avoid attracting sexual attention.• (of clothing) not revealing or emphasizing the figure: modest dress means that hemlines must be below the knee.
1. A woman IS NOT to wear ANYTHING that pertains to men or dress in a masculine fashion. This includes ALL types of pants with the exception of pantyhose and stockings. Pants are clothing that was designed for men. Women did not begin wearing pants until the 20th century when there was a shortage of clothing during the Great Depression. Women then had to take their husbands pants to perform hard labor jobs (coal mines etc…) to support their families while their husbands went to war or was deceased. Around the 1960’s, pants (mainly jeans) began to be worn as a style by women. Fashion designers like André Courrèges designed a fashionable type of jean specifically for women known as designer jeans. Nonetheless the laws of God are clear that women should not wear such things.
“The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.” Deuteronomy 22:5
2. A woman must dress in modest clothing that DOES NOT invite SEXUAL attention. No cleavage should be shown, the hem of a skirt or dress must extend to the BOTTOM of the KNEE careful not to show any of the THIGH region. Tight or see through clothing that reveals and emphasizes your figure cannot be worn. Women that have more in the breast and buttocks area should be mindful to purchase or make clothing that WILL NOT emphasize those areas.
“O Lord God of my father Simeon, to whom thou gavest a sword to take vengeance of the strangers, who loosened the girdle of a maid to defile her, and discovered the thigh to her shame, and polluted her virginity to her reproach; for thou saidst, It shall not be so; and yet they did so:” Judith 9:2
The clothing shown above is all unlawful because they are either too short and reveals the thighs, too tight, shows cleavage or can be seen through to reveal the under garments. Also beware of the “tights for pants” look. This is where women wear tights or leggings and some type of shirt or a short skirts with tights underneath (shown above). Tights are a form of stockings or pantyhose (leggings) and was created as UNDERWEAR to give women support during their menstrual cycle and warmth during the cold season. These are to be worn UNDER appropriate clothing. Shorts are also to be worn as undergarments and not in public.
True women of God could never be mistaken for a prostitute or harlot (hoes) by her outward appearance or her actions. This evil world has our women disrespecting their bodies by the inappropriate clothing that is glamorized by the media celebrities. Your clothing in itself tells a lot about you…more than you know.
“A man’s attire, and excessive laughter, and gait, shew what he is.” Ecclesiasticus 19:30
“And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.” Proverbs 7:10
What is harlot’s attire (clothing)? A harlot (hoe, loose, promiscuous) is an immodest woman that reveals her sexual body parts (thighs, breasts, buttock, belly) to attract male or female attention as a means to solicit sex. Since being completely naked goes against most culture’s moral laws, whores would only allow a portion of certain parts of their body to be exposed like the thigh or breast region (cleavage). In public places where showing any part of the breast, thigh or stomach area was not allowed (like religious worship), these working women would wear skin tight clothing to accentuate those regions to provide the same sexual affect. This is wear the term “SEXY” derives, to describe such clothing as shown above.
SEXY – sexually attractive or exciting, • sexually aroused.
So a woman may ask “what then can we wear?” It is sad that our sisters have to ask such a question as this shows that there is a severe shortage of virtuous women in the world. However the answer is quite simple. You can wear anything that is not described as IMMODEST. Skirts and dresses that cover the knee are acceptable in any color and style as long as it is not too tight and you cannot see through it. If the material is too thin, wear a slip underneath. Shirts, blouses, sweaters and T-shirts can be worn as long as your cleavage is not displayed, you can’t see through it and it is not too tight. The problem that most sisters have in this transition is that they feel they cannot be attractive without wearing the clothes that reveals certain assets. This is exactly why the Most High wants our women to be recognized and loved for their minds, spirit and wisdom and not because they show a little “skin”. True beauty comes from within the spirit and a wise women will not have the need to display her body outside of her marriage.
“A shameless woman shall be counted as a dog; but she that is shamefaced will fear the Lord.” Ecclesiasticus 26:25
Here are some ideas of lawful clothing that are modest and beautiful. Be creative and remember whether you are buying your clothes or sewing them yourself, you must always make sure that your clothing has fringes and a ribbon of blue around the bottom border (hem) of the dress/skirt or shirt of your outfit.
“Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: v39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:” Numbers 15:38-39
After purchasing or making your clothing, fringes and a ribbon of blue is added.
