The True Date Passover 2016?

When is Passover 2016?

This is a question asked by many of you with the desire to keep the Passover feast correctly.  This determination is vital because the month and day that is determined for the Passover will in fact affect the rest of the holy days for the entire year.  So it very important to know how to determine the Passover date.  The accurate date for Passover 2016 is April 20th.  The next question will be, “why are some keeping the Passover in March 2016?”  Let me explain.  Those keeping the Passover in March 2016 did not follow the scriptures properly to identify the new year.

Genesis 1:14 “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: Verse 15, And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. Verse 16, And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

The sun, moon and stars were created to assist man with recognizing months, days, seasons and years. They were also created for SIGNS to determine particular appointments like feasts.

Sirach 43:6 “He made the moon also to serve in her season for a declaration of times, and a sign of the world. Verse 7, From the moon is the sign of feasts, a light that decreaseth in her perfection. Verse 8, The month is called after her name, increasing wonderfully in her changing, being an instrument of the armies above, shining in the firmament of heaven;”

The scripture states that the moon in particular is used to determine when feast days are to be kept. The word MONTH derives from the word MOON therefore the moon is a tool that tells us the months and days for every year since the creation. Since the Passover is kept on the 14th day of the FIRST MONTH at even (evening), we have to know when the first month actually occurs.

Exodus 12:1-2 “And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, Verse 2, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.”

The scriptures clearly state that the month the children of Israel kept the Passover in Egypt is the FIRST month of the year and all months will be determined by the recognizing of the first month. What month was it?

Deuteronomy 16:1 “Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night.

Exodus 13:4 “This day came ye out in the month Abib.”

Examine the meaning of the month “Abib” from the Easton’s Bible Dictionary:

Abib: an ear of corn, the month of newly-ripened grain (Ex. 13:4; 23:15); the first of the Jewish ecclesiastical year, and the seventh of the civil year. It began about the time of the vernal equinox, on 21st March. It was called Nisan, after the Captivity (Neh. 2:1). On the fifteenth day of the month, harvest was begun by gathering a sheaf of barley, which was offered unto the Lord on the sixteenth (Lev. 23:4-11).

According to the definition, the month of Abib occurs in the spring season when the newly ripened grain and barley begins to spring forth. The spring season begins on March 21st every year.   Since the word “month” means, “moon”, Deuteronomy 16:1 commands us to observe the “moon” of spring. That means that the new moon that occurs on or after March 21st is the true MOON or month of Abib the first month of the year.

Some observed the new moon that occurred on March 9th 2016 as the first month of the year. However, that moon was not the moon of Abib because spring had not yet begun. Although those that kept the new moon of March 9th will celebrate their Passover in the spring season, they still neglected the commandment of the Most High to observe the first month in the spring season.

Exodus 12:1-2 “And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, Verse 2, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

Psalms 104:19 “He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.”

Therefore according to the scriptures, we will keep the first new moon of spring that will occur on April 6th 2016 making the Passover on April 20th, which will in fact be the 14th day of the 1st month at evening. This calculation follows the scriptures keeping the month of Abib and Passover in the spring season as commanded.

The error of those that keep the Passover in March can be quickly discovered. Examine their new moon dates.

  • March 9th = Month 1
  • April 7th = Month 2
  • May 6th = Month 3
  • June 5th = Month 4
  • July 4th = Month 5
  • August 2nd = Month 6
  • September 1st = Month 7
  • October 1st = Month 8
  • October 30th = Month 9
  • November 29th = Month 10
  • December 29th = Month 11
  • January 27th (2017) = Month 12

Notice that for those that keep the 1st month in March, the 12th month would begin on January 27th 2017 making the 1st month begin on February 26th (2017) in the winter. This is why we are commanded to start the month of Abib correctly. Now examine the year’s months when you start the month of Abib in the spring as the scriptures command.

  • 1st New Moon    4/6/16
  • 2nd New Moon 5/5/16
  • 3rd New Moon   6/4/16
  • 4th New Moon   7/3/16
  • 5th New Moon    8/1/16
  • 6th New Moon   8/31/16
  • 7th New Moon   9/30/16
  • 8th New Moon  10/29/16
  • 9th New Moon  11/28/16
  • 10th New Moon 12/28/16
  • 11th New Moon   1/27/17
  • 12th New moon  2/25/17
  • New year 3/27/17 (in spring)

You will find that the year correctly expires and begins in the spring. Isn’t it obvious?  Some will say, “it really doesn’t matter when we keep the feasts, just as long as we keep them ”.  The answer to that response is,

2 Maccabees 2:16 “Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification, we have written unto you, and ye shall do well, if ye keep the same days.”

The elders encouraged Israel to be sure that they keep the feasts on the same day in unity. If we are to keep the feast on the same day, then we should without a doubt keep them on the correct days.

Titus 1:14 “Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.”
