Adam & Eve Part 7: Deep Sleep & Bone of my Bone
When we read the story of Adam and Eve, many marvel at how God took one of Adam’s ribs and made a woman, let alone why he took one of his ribs. But was a rib in all reality taken at all?
Genesis 2:21 KJVS
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
The first thing we must highlight in this passage, is that “God cause a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept.” This is the preface that we need to be aware of, as it is the key to understanding what happened.
Hosea 12:10 KJVS
I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
God is known for using dreams and similitudes, to convey information to both us, as well as, our forefathers and even at times, the other nations. To get us to understand what he is doing or what he is going to do.
Job 4:13-15 KJVS
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, [14] Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. [15] Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
He waits until we are in the deep sleep portion of our sleep, to show us a dream (even if that said dream may be what we would call a nightmare). We see another example of this in Genesis with Abraham.
Genesis 15:12-14 KJVS
And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. [13] And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; [14] And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
Again, we must understand the preface of all of this… It was initiated with a dream. So yes it is of God, yes there is some truth to this, but there is a level of symbolism, similitudes, analogies and metaphors, that a dream is subject to. And God can show you events and paint a clearer picture, than if he just simply told you. As with Adam and with Abraham, God had the ability to talk to them using telepathy or appear before them face to face. But for this situation, I have other things I want to show you, that I need you to understand. And the only way to do that, or rather the wisest way, is to use a dream that gives both audio and visual clarity. Not just audio.
Genesis 2:21-23 KJVS
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; [22] And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. [23] And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
All of this is symbolic. How do I know? Exhibit A. The deep sleep that felll upon Adam. Exhibit B. Notice the colon: which means I am now explaining the idea or statement I just mentioned; clarifying or elaborating further. Exhibit C. Man is not missing a rib on one side or the other, or having an extra rib. As for Exhibit D. We will get that momentarily below.
Genesis 28:1-2 KJVS
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. [2] Arise, go to Padan–aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.
What God did with Adam was exactly what you read happening here. God had to look diligently upon the groups of people he made and find one that was of close stock to Adam. This is how we get to this statement below.
Genesis 29:14 KJVS
And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
Why would Laban make that reference? Because our forefathers understood something (actually a couple of things) we lost sight of. 1. We are bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh because of the proximity of relation we share through blood; we are close, we are relatives, we are family. 2. We understood the importance of having somewhat of an idea of what to expect in a marriage with this person based on who they come from; who they are associated with. 3. We understood that some people are not as concerned with being righteous or God fearing. 4. We understood that if you have values and principles that you want your children to learn, that is going to be strongly predicated upon who you have them with and what mindset they have.
2 Samuel 19:12-13 KJVS
Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king? [13] And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.
God was showing Adam the necessity to have someone close in relation to you; hence your cousin as a wife. Symbolic for a rib because you want someone in close relation to you to be by your side. You don’t want any one that is foreign or too distant that you don’t know what they are about or where they come from. And the principals I am teaching you, I need her to be on one page with and even more so the children that you will bear.
